A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
